FEB NEWS - Three FEB UNAIR students succeeded in creating a new innovative cockroach repellent product from natural ingredients, namely bay leaves. The three students include Andini Maulidiyah Rachma (Development Economics 2022), Sofia Naisa Hidayat (Accounting 2022), and Misfa Shafwa Zahidah (Accounting 2022). Apart from that, they collaborated with students from the Science and Technology group, including Amelia Safira Putri Vaturrachma (Faculty of Pharmacy 2022) and Mochammad Fahd Ali Hillaby, a student (Faculty of Advanced and Multidisciplinary Technology 2022). The five students are members of the Student Entrepreneurship Creativity Program (PKM-K) team under the guidance of Mr. Angga Erlando, SE, M.Ec.Dev., Lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business UNAIR.
The proposal they submitted was entitled "NOMOA: Utilization of Eugenol and Citral Compounds in Bay Leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) as a Cockroach Deterrent" and has succeeded in obtaining funding from the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture.
Andini Maulidiyah Rachma, as team leader, said that cockroaches are one of the insects that is difficult to eradicate, invasive, and can adapt to all environmental conditions. He continued that poor sanitation will increase the opportunity for cockroaches to breed quickly.
"On the other hand, using insecticides to ward off cockroaches is also dangerous. So, we took the initiative to create a cockroach deterrent from natural ingredients. After doing research, it turned out that bay leaves contain Eugenol and Citral compounds which can ward off cockroaches," concluded Andini.
NOMOA is the first innovation to prevent cockroaches from natural ingredients in Indonesia. Formulated in gel form, NOMOA has unique characteristics compared to other cockroach repellent products. "Because there are no natural-based cockroach repellent products, especially bay leaves. "So, we decided to take this opportunity and create a new market," added Andini.
NOMOA can be applied to the bottom wall near the bathroom floor drain or applied to the area near the sink hole as a place where cockroaches are vulnerable to getting out. Furthermore, the NOMOA team mentioned several advantages of their product, including having a fresh and not overpowering aroma, not causing harmful effects when inhaled or touched on the skin, and the application method is very practical and hygienic because it uses a pump applicator so that when applying it there is no need for direct contact. with hand.
NOMOA also supports the achievement of SDGs Point 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), especially target 3, namely achieving access to adequate sanitation and hygiene. The realization of the SDG target can be in the form of supporting sanitation with cockroach repellent containing compounds from natural ingredients.
"NOMOA is a business that is profitable from an economic perspective and sustainable from an innovation perspective because it is able to utilize natural resources and contribute to achieving the SDGs. "With NOMOA, we will create well-maintained sanitation for a healthy Indonesia, today and in the future," concluded Andini.
