ABSTRACT
One of the most important elements that entrepreneurs should do before they build a business is to design a business model as a blueprint that will be implemented in the company, because the success of the business depends on the design and implementation of the business model.
In this research, the researcher uses a simple business model concept which emphasizes value creation in a company called business model canvas (BMC), a tool consisting of 9 block elements to describe, analyze, and design a business model.
Those 9 elements are customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, and cost structures. The purpose of this study is to analyze the business model for a local startup company e-marketplace X using business model canvas (BMC).
Therefore the appropriate type of approach used in this study is descriptive qualitative approach with case study method. The results of the research based on interviews with 7 key informants and supporting theories that have been analyzed for their validity with triangulation technique are: (1) that the e-marketplace X business model's pattern is multi-sided platform, (2) customer segments are niche seller and mass buyer, 3) value propositions are performance value and newness, (4) distribution channel is indirect, (5) type of approach on customers is self-service, (6) revenue stream is transaction fee and freemium revenue model, ( 7) key resource is human capital, (8) key activity is network platform, (9) key partnership is strategic alliance with the city government's business community, and (10) cost structure is cost driven.
