UNAIR NEWS – Facing the uncertain global economic situation between the issues of trade wars and the health crisis, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Dr. (HC) Ir. Airlangga Hartanto, MBA., MMT., IPU. was present among Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) students to share his views in a public lecture.
The public lecture took place in the Fadjar Notonagoro Hall, Faculty of Economics and Business UNAIR, on Wednesday (29/1/20). The main theme of the event was "Future Direction of Indonesian Economic Development in Realizing Inclusive and Sustainable Development".
UNAIR Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, SE., MT, Ak., CMA in his speech expressed UNAIR's serious steps to continue to be involved in the national economy through the teaching industry .
"We are currently developing the teaching industry in Madura. This is of course to accommodate and increase the innovation of our students. "Because after all, universities are the main place for the development of innovation and development of a well-established economy," said Prof. Nasih.
Airlangga in his opening highlighted the uncertainty that exists in the current global economy. Where almost every country in the world has an economic growth trend that is below the global economic growth average.
“There are many events that have a significant impact on the global economy. "The European Union is weakening due to Brexit, East Asia is heating up due to Japan-Korea competition, hyperinflation in Latin America and most recently the corona virus which has weakened the tourism, automotive and Asian economic sectors," said Airlangga.
Even though these events had a negative effect on the economic growth of many countries, Airlangga actually revealed that they had brought positive things to the Indonesian economy.
In the midst of this uncertainty, Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, emerged as the most stable region. This happened because of several important points, including a good democratic situation, the birth of Indo Pacific cooperation, and sustainable multilateral relations between countries.
"As a result, we can see Indonesia's stable exchange rate at thirteen thousand six hundred, as well as stable economic growth at around five percent. "In recent years, our inflation has reached its lowest figure in the range of three percent," he said.
However, despite these achievements, the government still has a lot of homework that needs to be completed. Some of these include low employment, low inclusiveness, increased innovation, and protection for workers and the MSME industry.
"That's why we present the Omnibus Law and pre-employment cards. The Omnibus Law itself will be Indonesia's structural reform in the economy and employment. "There will be a lot of simplification and ease of investment, business, land acquisition and employment," said Airlangga.
Meanwhile, pre-employment cards provide main programs such as training, job placement , and business capital. Also present was B30 which reduces fuel use and switches to palm oil.
Airlangga then also highlighted the large skills gap that exists in Indonesia. This means that many high school and vocational school graduate students are not absorbed into industry. In the future, the government plans to build polytechnics, vocational schools and training institutions that are in line with the industries developing in the relevant areas.
"Furthermore, we will build economic regional connectivity, integration of the northern and southern regions, as well as superior programs in special economic regions such as Malang, Central Java and Madura," he said.
In the public lecture held in the Fadjar Notonagoro Hall, various high-ranking university and government officials were also present. Apart from that, no less than 800 students from various departments participated in the material presented by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs. (*)
