Technological advances are changing more rapidly, especially with the development of mobile devices.
This easy accessibility, when used in the workplace, can have both positive and negative impacts. As we know, a workplace is an atmosphere where an individual does work according to his field. Yu et al., (2018) further claim that not all workplaces make it easy for an employee to use a cellphone while working. This is because company managers or owners do not want easy internet access to hamper employee performance. Essentially, people with the same job may have different levels of success when performing tasks (Wisniewski & Dutton, 2011), making their roles in the workplace often different. A Nucleus Research study found that full access to Facebook at work resulted in a 1.5% drop in performance.
Individuals who are too dependent on social media seem to have negative feelings which can ultimately increase techno-stress and trigger a decline in performance (Brooks, 2015). This is in accordance with research by Yu et al., (2018), who noted that the decline in performance was mostly caused by social media fatigue. Yu et al., (2019) said this condition arises when an employee uses social media excessively during working hours. As a result, employees cannot work efficiently and optimally. This is also in line with research by Lee (2016), who noted that when someone receives information that exceeds their capabilities, they may feel out of control and experience social media fatigue. Social media fatigue is not only influenced by information overload, but also by communication overload (Zhang et al., 2016). The study shows that there will be contact that is considered unnecessary when someone interacts and talks constantly, or in terminology, the idea is called excessive communication. Bukalapak is one of the largest e-commerce companies in Indonesia, and is even one of the four unicorns based in Indonesia.
Much of his business is conducted online, which has resulted in his employees being actively and intensely connected to the internet. Bukalapak uses online marketing strategies that require greater attention. In fact, to accelerate its progress, Bukalapak implemented a massive marketing strategy by increasing advertising to persuade more people to open Lapak (online shop) and become buyers (www.deerham.com). Therefore, employees are more likely to experience Social Media Exhaustion. The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of Information Overload and Communication Overload on Social Media Exhaustion and Job Performance among employees in the marketing department of Bukalapak Company.
The research results state that Information Overload and Communication Overload have a positive and significant effect on Social Media Exhaustion, then Social Media Exhaustion, Information Overload and Communication Overload have a negative and significant effect on Job Performance.
