Abstract

The costs of Presenteeism are currently a focus of attention in human resource management and academia. Several previous studies noted that the total costs that must be borne by management from presenteeism behavior are greater than the costs when employees are absent. This research aims to describe the phenomenon of presenteeism that occurs in the academic world, especially secondary education. This research was conducted at a high school founded by the Al-Hikmah Islamic Foundation in Surabaya. This research uses the phenomenology method to describe the phenomenon of presenteeism carried out by Al-Hikmah High School teachers, the reasons why teachers carry out presenteeism and the impact of presenteeism on the teaching and learning process. The results of this research show that the phenomenon of presenteeism has been carried out by 75% of teachers at Al-Hikmah High School. The proportion of genders who practice presenteeism is balanced with a proportion of 50% each. Then, the presenteeism mechanism occurs when the teacher is present in a sick condition until he reaches certain health conditions and decides not to attend. Furthermore, the reasons why teachers carry out presenteeism are based on professionalism, social drive and excessive task avoidance. The impact of presenteeism is a reduction in the ability to fulfill job demands as a teacher starting from physical demands, mental demands and interactional demands. By reducing the fulfillment of job demands, the quality of the teaching and learning process will decrease and the formation of students' morals will be disrupted. On the other hand, if the teacher is absent, the impact on the teaching and learning process will be worse because the substitute teacher who replaces him only looks after the class and gives assignments to students. The presenteeism phenomenon at Al-Hikmah High School shows that the costs of absenteeism are higher than presenteeism.
