Abstract

Background: Candida albicans is a normal flora on human mucosal surfaces which can be an opportunistic pathogen and cause Candidiasis, especially in immunocompromised patients. Candida albicans biofilms are used to protect themselves from antifungal therapy, resulting in resistance to standard therapy. Citrus limon fruit peel is thought to contain active ingredients that can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans biofilm. Objective: To observe the inhibitory power of Citrus limon fruit peel essential oil on the growth of Candida albicans biofilm. Methods: Candida albicans biofilms were grown on SDB with a glucose concentration of 8%. Then treated with Citrus limon fruit peel essential oil in concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, 1.56% and 0.78%. Next, staining was carried out using 0.1% crystal violet for 15 minutes and continued with optical density reading using a microplate reader at a wavelength of 595 nm. Results: The lowest inhibitory power of Citrus limon fruit peel essential oil was at a concentration of 3.125%. At concentrations of 0.78% to 25% there was no significant difference. At concentrations of 50% and 100%, significant differences appear. Conclusion: At a concentration of 0.78% Citrus limon fruit peel essential oil was able to inhibit the growth of Candida albicans biofilm, and significant inhibitory power existed in the concentration range of 50% to 100%.
