Abstract
This research aims to examine in depth what women experience in running for regional head and how women try to achieve the position of regional head. Research that examines women's leadership not only in business corporations but also in politics causes an imbalance in the distribution of power, with women as a minority. This research used a multiple-case study approach, conducted in Central Java in three districts led by women as regional heads, namely Sragen, Grobogan and Klaten. Informants involved in this research included regional heads, colleagues, DPRD members, community leaders and religious leaders. The data was analyzed in several stages, namely analyzing within-case data, searching for cross-case patterns, forming hypotheses, enfolding literature, and reaching closure. The research results show that motivation for appreciation and self-actualization motivates women to nominate themselves as regional leaders, as well as the influence of role models. In addition, the research results also identified the obstacles faced by women in achieving regional leadership positions, which originate from internal and external barriers. Internal barriers include beliefs about women's nature, dual roles, emotions, and work-family conflict. The external obstacles come from personal issues, religious issues regarding female leaders, and gender stereotypes. To overcome the obstacles faced, this research reveals the strategies carried out by women, in the form of strengthening personal drive including motivation, commitment, and personal characteristics that combine agentic and communal. Apart from strengthening personal drive, other strategies used to overcome obstacles are a personal approach and network development.
