Abstract

This research empirically examines the causal relationship between population growth and economic growth, and analyzes the influence of capital, labor, population growth and human resources on economic growth in ASEAN-5 countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand). The data used is time series data, 1980-2013. The method used in this research is Granger Causality and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). VECM because the data is stationary at the first difference and there is cointegration between variables. From the estimation results, it is concluded that the relationship between population growth and economic growth in ASEAN-5 is strong and negative flowing from economic growth to population growth. This research supports theoretical and empirical opinions which claim that increasing household income will increase the value of the quality rather than the quantity of children. And simultaneously, population growth can act as a stimulus for economic growth through the realization of favorable economies of scale caused by low labor costs, increasing aggregate demand for goods and services and promoting human capital, and increasing efficiency.

Keywords: economic growth, population growth, capital, labor force, human resources, Granger causality, VECM, ASEAN-5
