Abstract

Family companies have a fairly large contribution to the economy in Indonesia, but a phenomenon that often occurs is succession problems which cause conflict in family businesses. Family companies begin to decline in performance and may go bankrupt after the first generation abdicates and is continued by the next generation, for this reason it is important once in selecting business heirs as the next generation, this research aims to determine family strategies in selecting the characteristics of business heirs as the next generation of family businesses in Indonesia. This research uses content analysis on the "Better Generation" and "Inspiring Generation" rubrics published by Jawa Pos, and is further analyzed using mixed methods, namely combining quantitative and qualitative analysis to obtain optimal research results. The research results show that the characteristics of the next generation, such as sons, are dominant as the next generation in family businesses; and the first child is mostly the next generation because the first child was first taught by his parents in business; The educational factor is also the main thing, especially related to the quality and linearity of candidacy as the next generation. Apart from that, other findings state that after completing education, family business successors immediately work on-farm or in their family business to gain experience through business introductions, observing, and doing internships. , and help in the family business, and they also start their careers by gaining experience in ordinary positions,
