Improving the quality of Scientific Publication: Hima PDIA FEB UNAIR SHEETING WORKSHOP ACADEMIC WRITING & READING SKILLS
(HIMA PDIA NEWS) - As part of an effort to improve reading and academic writing skills for undergraduate students, students of the Accounting Science Doctoral Program (HIMA PDIA), Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga (FEB Airlangga University) held a workshop titled "Academic Writing and Reading Skills" on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Write academic better.
This workshop presents Novrys Suhardianto, SE, MSA, AK., Ph.D., Lecturer in FEB Unair who has broad experience in the field of academic authorship. He is also a graduate of the City of Hong Kong, known as an educational approach based on quality reading and writing skills. The event was hosted by Imam, a student of PDIA Feb Unair, who acts as a moderator to ensure the course of the discussion interactively. Interestingly, this activity is packaged in a semi-formal format and ends with an iftar session together.
The Importance of Reading and Academic Writing Skills
After the opening and praying session by the moderator, the event continued with the presentation of material by Novrys Suhardianto. He started the session by expressing his anxiety to doctoral students who often experience difficulties in writing structured and systematically. According to him, there are two main factors that help students in pouring ideas into academic writing, namely mastery of knowledge and the ability to express knowledge in writing.
Furthermore, Novrys explained that reading skills are the key to gaining knowledge. He divides reading skills into three levels:
1. Spelling - Reading word for word without understanding its meaning in depth.
2. Understanding (comprehensive) - Reading with a full understanding of the meaning of each word and sentence.
3. Analyzing critical - not only understanding, but also links the contents of the reading with the knowledge possessed to produce more in -depth thinking.
In addition, he also discussed three levels of writing skills, namely:
1. Arrange words into sentences.
2. Make a structured story.
3. Writing critically.
In the academic context, Novrys emphasizes the importance of reading references critically and understanding the narrative structure in research, not just memorizing variables. He gave an example that a good academic writer must be able to build a critical story based on the mapping of previous references, not just to arrange data linearly.
Dissecting articles and effective writing techniques
As part of the practice session, Novrys also dissected two articles from a reputable journal to provide insight to participants on how to read scientific articles effectively and understand good writing structures. He emphasized that every paragraph in academic writing must have at least one sentence the main idea and one explanatory sentence. In addition, each paragraph must have good cohesion so that writing is more easily understood by the reader.
Academic impact and contribution
This workshop not only aims to improve students' skills in scientific publications, but also contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially the 4th SDG: quality education. Improving the quality of academic authors is believed to be able to strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia's academics at the global level, as well as opening opportunities for research and scholarship funding.
More than that, this activity is also a forum for cross -level students to share experiences, strengthen academic networks, and encourage collaboration in research. With the closer synergy among students, it is hoped that a strong academic climate can be formed, so that more quality scientific works are produced from FEB Airlangga University.
