Abstract
The cost of presenteeism is currently a focus of attention for human resource management and academics. Several previous studies have noted that the total cost to management from presenteeism behavior is greater than the cost when employees are absent. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of presenteeism that occurs in the academic world, especially in secondary education. This research was conducted at a high school founded by the Al-Hikmah Islamic Foundation in Surabaya. This study used the phenomenology method to describe the phenomenon of presenteeism carried out by Al-Hikmah High School teachers, the reasons for teachers doing presenteeism, and the impact of presenteeism on the teaching and learning process. The results of this study indicate that the phenomenon of presenteeism has been carried out by 75% of teachers at Al-Hikmah High School. The proportion of genders who engage in presenteeism is balanced with a proportion of each 50%. Then, the mechanism of presenteeism occurs when teachers attend while sick until reaching a certain health condition limit and decide not to attend. Furthermore, the reasons for teachers doing presenteeism are based on professionalism, social drive, and excessive task avoidance. The impact of presenteeism is a reduced ability to meet job demands as a teacher, including physical, mental, and interactional demands. This reduced ability to fulfill job demands reduces the quality of the teaching and learning process and disrupts the development of students' morals. On the other hand, if a teacher is absent, the impact on the teaching and learning process is even worse because the substitute teacher only supervises the class and assigns assignments. The phenomenon of presenteeism at Al-Hikmah High School shows that the costs of absenteeism are higher than those of presenteeism.
