imronmaward feb unairImron Mawardi, a Sharia Economics expert from the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga, in his opinion piece in the Disway Daily, provided his views on the planned merger between Bank Muamalat and BTN's sharia business unit. He stated that the merger is a crucial step, expected to be completed before October of this year, creating a bank with assets of around Rp 120 trillion and the second-largest sharia bank in Indonesia.

BTN Syariah, one of Bank BTN's sharia business units, views the merger as a crucial step after its assets surpassed the critical Rp 50 trillion mark. Meanwhile, Bank Muamalat has significantly higher assets than BTN Syariah, despite its lower net profit. However, Bank Muamalat managed to grow significantly in 2023.

Imron emphasized that this merger is not just about assets, but also about operational efficiency strategies and market power. He emphasized that this merger must be accompanied by sound and robust management structure to address potential conflicts of interest and other risks. If successful, this merger could serve as a model for other sharia business unit mergers in Indonesia.
