THE POLITICAL ECONOMY of Indonesian banking is sick. Seriously. The symptoms are no longer just slowing credit growth figures or tight liquidity. The symptoms have now spread to the deepest veins of the intermediation system: frightened bankers and credit analysts, who are running for transfers, who would rather resign than risk their futures in prison.
The cause is simple, yet absurd. It's not the monetary crisis, it's not global turmoil, or even overly restrictive monetary policy. The cause is a specter deliberately created by law enforcement officials themselves: the baseless criminalization of bad debts.
Remember: bad debts are painful. But the criminalization of bad debts is even more painful because it kills courage, kills innovation, and ultimately kills the future of the Indonesian economy.
Infobank is not defending corruptors. Nor is it condoning bad debts. We are simply reminding that the law, in a healthy civilization, must be proportional. It must be able to distinguish between criminals and professionals working in good faith.
