Overview

The course examines major philosophical questions about the nature of science, methods of acquiring science, and the implications of the development of modern science. It also examines the position and role of science in the universe and the debate over the basic rules of modern science. This course discusses the differences between science and common sense, examines the significant transitions in the tradition of philosophy (i.e., Karl Raimund Popper’s falsification and Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm change/scientific revolution), and examines classical debates in philosophy (e.g., whether reality can be explained by science or how historical contextuality influence the development of science). This course also invites students to appreciate the practical implications that the philosophy of science brings to a variety of modern research methodologies.
