FACULTY HISTORY

Throughout its history, the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga, has consistently adapted to meet evolving educational needs while maintaining its commitment to academic excellence and professional development in the field of economics.

1952-1953

The Beginnings

This history began with an idea conceived by Indonesian students studying in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, including Fadjar Notonagoro and Sumitro. They recognized that Indonesia did not yet have a single institution of higher education dedicated to economics, forcing students to pursue their studies abroad. Their vision led to the establishment of the Krisnadwipayana College of Economics (Perguruan Tinggi Ekonomi Krisnadwipayana) in Surabaya, founded by Dr. Ong Eng Djie, who at the time served as Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia. Although the institution was forced to close after one and a half years of operation, it planted the seeds for the subsequent development of economics education in the region.

1954

Establishment

On 1 January 1954, the Surabaya College of Economics Foundation (Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Ekonomi Surabaya, PTES) was officially established, subsequently formalized through a notarial deed by Mr. Drs. Liem Hie Hian on 22 July 1954. The foundation brought together prominent figures from various fields, including government officials, business leaders, and community leaders. Its founders included Mas Goenadi Widjoasmoro (Head of the Surabaya Finance Inspectorate), Liem Djing Lioe (Agent of the Oei Tiong Ham Concern), Raden Mas Soeparto (Resident of Surabaya), and several other prominent figures.

1954-1957

Early Development

PTES officially began its academic activities on 15 September 1954, with an opening ceremony held in the hall of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. During this early period, lectures were conducted at several locations, including the Bahari Building (now Tunjungan Plaza), the Agrarian Affairs/National Land Agency (BPN) building, and borrowed rooms at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Airlangga. The institution initially offered only one department, Corporate Economics (Ekonomi Perusahaan). In 1957, PTES established an important collaboration with the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Indonesia, in Jakarta, which subsequently paved the way for the development of the General Economics program.

1961-1963

Transition to University Status

Through the persistent efforts led by R. Samadikoen, Soewondo, and Wilono, PTES reached a significant milestone on 1 September 1961, when it was officially integrated as the Faculty of Economics, Universitas Airlangga, through Ministerial Decree No. 31/1961. The faculty retained its existing programs and, with support from Universitas Indonesia, added a Department of Accounting in 1963.

1975-1986

Modernization Era

This era was marked by significant educational reform. In 1975, the faculty introduced its first non-degree program, the Corporate Administration Expert Education Program (Pendidikan Ahli Administrasi Perusahaan, PAAP). A major transformation occurred in 1979 when the faculty shifted from a fixed-package curriculum system to the Semester Credit System, which significantly improved graduation rates. Department names were also modernized during this period, with General Economics renamed Development Studies and Corporate Economics renamed Management. The faculty continued to expand its offerings, adding specialized programs in Taxation (1984/1985) and Marketing Management (1985/1986).

1996-2001

Contemporary Development

The faculty underwent its first national accreditation in 1996, with Development Studies, Management, and Accounting initially receiving B accreditation. By 2000, both Accounting and Development Studies had achieved A accreditation, reflecting the institution’s commitment to academic excellence. This period was also marked by significant infrastructure development, including the construction of an extension building in 1996 and the Business Education Center (Pusat Pendidikan Bisnis) in 2000–2001. The faculty embraced technological advancement by establishing computer laboratories, internet facilities, and digital resources to support the needs of modern education.
