In the era of rapid globalization, cooperatives face a major challenge: the lack of interest from the younger generation, especially Generation Z. To address this challenge, a seminar entitled "Millennial Cooperative: Shaping the Future of Collaboration and Innovation" was held. Cooperatives are often considered old-fashioned, conventional institutions, therefore many Generation Z are more interested in digital startups, modern investments, and creative economy platforms. This seminar will discuss several solutions to the above problems, such as rebranding cooperatives to be more attractive to the younger generation and developing cooperative innovations to compete with modern businesses.
The Student Cooperative Study Group (KOPSI) held a seminar which is one of the work programs of the Education and Training (EnT) division. The Cooperative seminar activity was held for 1 day, precisely on Friday, May 16, 2025 at the Cendrawasih Hall, Medang Building, 3rd Floor, Universitas Airlangga. This activity is in line with the SDGs, especially point 4, namely Quality Education, because this seminar is a means of education for students and millennials about the importance of cooperatives as a sustainable collaborative business model through materials on rebranding, digitalization, and cooperative innovation that can broaden participants' insights about the collective economy. Then this seminar is also in line with SDGs point 8, namely Decent Work & Economic Growth, by inviting Generation Z to be involved in cooperatives, this seminar opens up opportunities for collective entrepreneurship, reduces unemployment, and creates jobs.
This seminar emphasized that cooperatives should not be stuck with outdated models. With a new, more dynamic approach, cooperatives can become a platform for economic collaboration that appeals to the younger generation. Rebranding, technological innovation, and a relevant approach are key to building future-ready millennial cooperatives. For students and Generation Z, cooperatives should be more than just traditional organizations, but rather a modern economic movement that can provide financial and entrepreneurial solutions in the digital age.
