Maritime Economy

This course focuses on maritime industrial economics, combining historical and geographical approaches. Topics covered include a historical introduction that presents the development of international trade and shipping from the 18th century to the present; shipping market analysis; market structure and the factors shaping supply, market dynamics, demand, and profitability from short- and long-term perspectives; and major shipping and offshore markets. Other topics include economic theories of the division of labor and international trade—from Ricardo to new economic geography; industrial cluster theory; and location competition between countries.
