Abstract

Family companies often face significant challenges in increasing their sustainability because they cannot manage their resources to be able to adapt to dynamic environmental changes. Managing knowledge in family companies provides a vision by utilizing knowledge as an intangible resource to increase the company's sustainability, but without a coordination mechanism in managing conflict it will lead to the involvement of family members across generations into conflict which results in family members being unable to manage knowledge to improve performance. The aim of this research is to identify the efforts made by family companies in managing knowledge and to identify the efforts made by family companies in coordinating mechanisms to manage conflicts due to generational involvement to support increasing knowledge resources. The research was conducted using a single case study approach in a family company in Indonesia that focused on the footwear industry. By conducting interviews with 3 second generation family members, 4 third generation family members and 2 professionals outside the family members who are involved in the family business, it can be concluded that managing knowledge is carried out through the Knowledge Bundling process to increase the cognitive knowledge of family members and the Mobilization process Knowledge to implement the knowledge possessed to improve performance so that family companies can adapt to dynamic environmental changes. Meanwhile, coordination mechanisms for managing conflicts resulting from generational involvement can be carried out through Family Business Culture, Empowerment of Authority, Coordination of Authority, in order to increase the continuity of family members in the business. Through this research, a framework model can be proposed: managing knowledge resources in the resource orchestration process in family companies by showing that in the case of generational involvement there is a need for separate division of authority, decentralization of authority and succession authority in each business unit in the family company to supporting family companies that are conducive to managing knowledge to increase their sustainability.
