Abstract

Currently, millennials are beginning to dominate the workforce. However, working millennials face challenging conditions in dealing with stress and burnout. Work-life balance has become a concern for millennials, who demand a balance between the quality of their work and personal lives. The purpose of this study is to explore how millennials interpret work-life balance and the obstacles they encounter in their efforts to achieve it. This research study was conducted using a qualitative method using a phenomenological approach, which is in accordance with the research objective of exploring work-life balance in depth. Data were collected from interviews with 10 millennial employees at the managerial level in a sharia-based work environment who indicated they experienced obstacles in their efforts to achieve work-life balance. The findings of this study successfully identified the causes, role conflicts, impacts of work-life balance, individual efforts to manage work-life balance, factors underlying the meaning of the concept of work-life balance, and manifestations of the meaning of work-life balance. The obstacles encountered by individuals in achieving work-life balance are caused by limitations in distributing personal resources across life domains. The interpretation of the work-life balance concept by millennial employees at the managerial level is based on individual and organizational factors. Each individual's interpretation manifests itself in unique and distinct ways, encompassing fair resource distribution, quality of life attainment, reciprocal relationships between domains, clear separation of domains, and equality between worldly and afterlife life.
