Abstract

Women's participation in the workforce shows an increasing trend across various sectors. One such sector is higher education, where women become professional workers (lecturers). Some female lecturers, in addition to carrying out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, also perform administrative activities (additional duties). Married female lecturers shoulder dual responsibilities, as lecturers and as housewives. Faced with these dual roles, female lecturers face greater challenges in achieving work-life balance. This study aims to determine the understanding of female lecturers who carry additional duties regarding the concept of work-life balance. The next objective is to explore the factors related to the different understandings of work-life balance among female lecturers. This study uses a qualitative approach, using phenomenology as the method. The data collection technique used in-depth interviews with purposive sampling as the sampling technique because it is expected to have specific characteristics in the sample, and the interview questions are semi-structured. The interpretations of female lecturers who carry additional duties regarding the concept of work-life balance vary based on demographic factors such as marital status, family structure, and the presence of parents in the family. Furthermore, it is also influenced by the norms of patriarchal Indonesian society. Work-life balance is defined as the distribution of time, attention, and energy between two domains: work and home or family. The interpretation of the position and role of female lecturers based on societal norms gives rise to several negative emotional feelings. This interpretation of work-life balance also raises challenges that must be faced in achieving work-life balance, including reduced time with family, time for oneself, and time for social activities. Furthermore, several conflicts arise due to friction between life domains and the emergence of health issues. Furthermore, it also raises strategies used by female lecturers in achieving work-life balance, namely building communication, sharing and delegating responsibilities.
