Abstract

The young population is a human resource with better potential compared to the older generation. The number of young people has increased to reach 70 million people in 2035. This large number is expected to be optimally absorbed into the labor market. This study aims to examine and analyze the socio-demographic, socio-economic, and regional characteristics that influence the chances of individuals becoming young people not working, attending school, or taking training (Not in Employment, Education, or Training/NEET). This study uses data from the National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) in February 2018. The results of descriptive data show that young people who have the opportunity to become NEET are those who are female, married, have low education, have disabilities, live with an unemployed head of household, live in rural areas, and are on the island of Java with proportions of 29.7 percent, 34.9 percent, 30.3 percent, 49.4 percent, 23.5 percent, 21.5 percent, and 24.3 percent, respectively. Binary logistic regression analysis shows that individual characteristics seen from socio-demographic, socio-economic, and regional perspectives show that each of these characteristics has a significant influence on an individual's chances of becoming NEET.

Keywords: Young population, NEET, binary logistic regression
