Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of economic, demographic, and social characteristics, including wages, age, education level, household status, residential area, and work experience, on the employment decisions of female workers in Indonesia. Based on data from the National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas) from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in August 2017, this study used the multinomial logistic regression method. The results show that wages, age, education level, household status, residential area, and work experience significantly influence the employment decisions of female workers in Indonesia. Female workers have an increased probability of working in the tertiary sector compared to the primary sector. This finding is in line with the increasing trend of female workers in the tertiary sector, which is one of the factors influencing the shift in economic structure in Indonesia. Another finding is that increasing wages reduce the probability of female workers working in the secondary sector. This condition may be related to the existence of minimum wage regulations and work contracts that bind female workers in the secondary sector, particularly in the formal manufacturing sector. Based on region, female workers with a high school education, being the head of the household, living in urban areas, and having work experience across regions increase the probability of working in the tertiary sector.

Keywords: decision to work, female workers, primary sector, secondary sector, tertiary sector, multinomial logistic regression
