HIMA S3AK NEWS Feb Unair

HIMA S3AK NEWS Feb Unair(HIMA S3AK – NEWS) Surabaya, February 21, 2025 – In an effort to improve the quality of academic publications among doctoral students, the Accounting Doctoral Student Association, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga (HIMA PDIA FEB UNAIR) held a “Tips, Tricks & Share (TTS)” event with the theme of Doctoral Publication Strategy: Successfully Penetrating Emerald on Friday, February 21, 2025 via online zoom. This event aims to provide insights and practical strategies to doctoral students in penetrating internationally reputable journals, especially those published in Emerald.

This activity presented Dr. Ranto Partomuan Sihombing, SE., M.Si., CSRS., as the Head of the Master of Accounting Study Program at Soegijapranata Catholic University and an alumnus of the Doctoral Program in Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga (PDIA FEB UNAIR), who has extensive experience in academic publications. This activity was moderated by Wahyu Junaedi, a PDIA FEB UNAIR student, who also directed the discussion to keep it interactive and beneficial for all participants.

The event began with the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and the Airlangga Hymn, as a sign of respect and pride for the institution. The event continued with remarks from the Head of HIMA PDIA FEB UNAIR, Mas Andy Setiabudi, followed by a group photo session and a prayer as a symbol of hope that the event would run smoothly and benefit all participants.

Then, the main session began with a presentation by Dr. Ranto Partomuan Sihombing. In his presentation, he explained in depth various important aspects of scientific publication, especially those related to the Emerald journal. Some of the main points discussed included the reasons for choosing Emerald as a publication target, effective publication strategies to penetrate Q1 journals without fees, and good academic writing techniques. He also highlighted the important aspects of using appropriate academic language, the writing style accepted in reputable journals, and the ethics of scientific publication that must be upheld by every academic. One crucial point discussed was the importance of avoiding plagiarism by writing in one's own language, not simply paraphrasing from other literature.

Dr. Ranto also shared his personal experiences in facing publication challenges, including receiving rejections from international journals and how to deal with them with the right improvement strategies. He explained that the publication process is not an easy journey, but with the right strategy, perseverance, and a deep understanding of journal requirements, the chances of being accepted in a reputable journal increase. In this session, participants were also invited to reflect on their publication journey with reflective questions such as: "How many times have you experienced rejection? Why was the article rejected? What actually makes an article accepted in a reputable international journal?"

Following the presentation, the session continued with a discussion and Q&A session, a highly anticipated moment for participants. Many enthusiastic participants asked questions related to publication strategies, good writing techniques, and how to overcome challenges in the journal review process. Dr. Ranto patiently answered each question with concrete examples and strategies that participants could immediately implement. The discussion was interactive, with several participants sharing their experiences in overcoming the challenges of scientific publication.

Toward the end of the event, the committee took back control for the closing session. During this session, participants were given the opportunity to check in and complete an evaluation questionnaire to provide feedback on the webinar's implementation and the topics discussed. The committee also provided information on the upcoming TTS agenda, which will focus on other academic publication topics relevant to the needs of doctoral students.

This activity not only provides doctoral students with insights and skills in scientific publications, but also has a broader impact in supporting several points of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among other things, improving the quality of academic publications contributes to increasing the competitiveness of Indonesian academics on the global stage, which ultimately can open greater opportunities for them to obtain research funding and scholarships (no poverty). With access to better academic resources, it is hoped that their contributions to science and public policy can have an impact on poverty alleviation more broadly.

Meanwhile, this activity directly contributes to improving the capacity of Indonesian academics to write and publish quality scientific articles (quality education). The ability to write in reputable journals not only enhances an individual's academic credibility but also drives improvements in the quality of higher education in Indonesia as a whole. By increasing the number of quality publications, Indonesian academic institutions can gain greater global recognition, which in turn can improve university rankings and their attractiveness to prospective international students.

Furthermore, this activity also provides opportunities for academics from across institutions to share knowledge and experiences, create stronger academic networks, and encourage collaboration in research and scientific publications (partnership for the goals). With this close partnership between academics, universities, and the global scientific community, it is hoped that the quality of Indonesian research and academic contributions will continue to improve on the international stage. Stay tuned for the next TTS series! [mij]
