(HIMA PDIA NEWS) Surabaya, Tuesday, October 21, 2025 — The Accounting Doctoral Program Student Association (HIMA PDIA) Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga held a workshop entitled “Getting to Know Primary Data and Survey Research: Do and Don't” on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. This activity took place in a hybrid manner at the Miendrowo Hall FEB UNAIR and via Zoom Meeting, with Prof. Dr. I Made Narsa, SE, M.Si., Ak., CA., Secretary of the Directorate of Education UNAIR, as the sole resource person. The event was moderated by Agung Prasetyo Nugroho Wicaksono, a PDIA UNAIR student, and attended by 83 participants consisting of students, lecturers, and researchers — 42 attended in person and 41 online.
This workshop aims to strengthen academics' and researchers' understanding of the concepts, design, and application of primary data-based and survey-based research. In his presentation, Prof. I Made Narsa emphasized the importance of methodological accuracy in social and accounting research, particularly in survey design, population determination, and representative sampling techniques.
According to him, errors in survey design can introduce bias and weaken the validity of research results. Therefore, this activity is designed to equip participants with the methodological skills to produce accurate, ethical, and useful research for the development of science and public policy.
The material presented covers various important aspects, starting from an introduction to data types (qualitative, quantitative, and panel), research design (qualitative, quantitative, synthetic, and mixed), to methodological issues such as sample selection, level of analysis, and instrument validity. Prof. Narsa also outlined the steps of questionnaire construction, validity and reliability testing, and cross-cultural adaptation procedures according to Beaton et al.'s (2000) standards.
Participants were encouraged to recognize various forms of survey bias—such as social desirability bias, question-order bias, wording bias, and non-response bias—and strategies to minimize them. This comprehensive approach provided practical insights to enable researchers to produce academically and empirically valid primary data.
The workshop was interactive, using a combination of lectures, case studies, and open discussions.
Participants actively asked questions about the application of survey design in various fields of accounting and management research. In addition to receiving e-certificates for 8 SKP and e-modules of workshop materials, participants also had the opportunity to participate in individual consultation sessions on their respective research designs. This activity created a collaborative learning space that connected methodological theory with empirical practice, while strengthening the research capacity of postgraduate students.
This workshop is a concrete manifestation of Universitas Airlangga contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically point 4 (Quality Education), point 9 (Innovation and Knowledge Infrastructure), and point 17 (Partnership for the Goals). Through this activity, UNAIR strengthens its role in building an ethical, inclusive, and sustainable research ecosystem. The multidisciplinary and collaborative approach implemented reflects the university's commitment to encouraging academic transformation towards evidence-based research. Thus, this activity not only improves the methodological competence of participants but also strengthens the scientific foundation for the development of accounting science and social research in Indonesia that is aligned with the global sustainable development agenda.
