(FEB NEWS) The Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) is a long-standing event with numerous participants. This year, in 2023, the event will be held again at the World Trade Center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Held from March 16–18, 2023, 15 participating countries from across the globe will participate, including Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Iran, Poland, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan (ROC), Thailand, and many more.
In this event, two Accounting students of FEB UNAIR (Arfian Mulia Bagus Arijanto – Accounting 2020 and Abdul Rohman – Accounting 2020), along with 3 other Universitas Airlangga students (Khairun Nisa, Dwita Rahmadini Hendri, and Nabila Sabillah), joined in 1 team, to participate in the MTE 2023 event, by presenting an innovative work in the Healthcare, Personal Care Technology, Biotechnology and Life Sciences category. Alhamdulillah, the Universitas Airlangga Team managed to win two awards at once, namely: Gold Medal (By Malaysia Technology Expo) and Special Award (By: International Invention and Trade Expo London).

In addition, MTE 2023 was attended by several related parties, both to expand relationships and new opportunities in the fields of innovation, knowledge, and research. Malaysian officials who attended the event included: from the Malaysian Science and Technology Information Center, the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, the National STEM Association, the Ministry of Higher Education, the Malaysian Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
The title presented by the accounting students of FEB UNAIR is DearEYE as Automated Detector of Retinal Fundus Images using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Smartphone Fundoscope for Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy Screening. Although from accounting students of FEB UNAIR, it does not rule out the possibility of continuing innovation in the health sector. This is of course supported by high collaboration with other faculties, the faculties that collaborated in the preparation of the idea are the faculty of medicine from the department of midwifery and the faculty of science and technology from the department of biomedical engineering. Deareyes is a technological tool created out of our concern regarding the very high rate of blindness in Asia reaching 20 million people. This high number is supported by the high cost of treatment related to vision and blindness which costs an average of $ 16,838 per person in 1 year.
Abdul Rohman, a representative of FEB UNAIR students, explained that “The research process is very long and requires extensive research. Our role in this research is crucial in analyzing the sustainability of the product. Another factor that motivated us to be involved in this innovation is the public’s need for access to eye health checks.”
“Furthermore, we also need to conduct numerous surveys regarding public awareness and interest regarding the urgency of using this product. For this reason, we need to partner with doctors and healthcare professionals to be involved in order to see the potential for its development and use in the healthcare world. Considering that our product is directly involved with humans/society, the involvement of doctors and healthcare professionals is crucial in gaining public trust.” Abdul Rahman added.
“We are also very happy to be able to bring this innovation to the international stage and be able to deliver the best performance. Not only that, the competitors faced in an event of this magnitude are not focused on one or two countries but up to dozens of countries. Seeing this, we are not afraid to continue to strive for the best and produce achievements, especially for UNAIR and specifically for the Faculty of Economics and Business UNAIR,” said Arfian.
"The two awards we brought home are truly extraordinary, as they have made UNAIR proud and made it a nationally recognized institution. We extend our gratitude to UNAIR, FEB UNAIR, and the Accounting Department, who have supported us tremendously, enabling us to win both awards. Not all teams are able to achieve both the Gold Award and the Special Award."
