(FEB NEWS) As a concrete manifestation of the spirit of Indonesian youth in realizing sustainable development, Aliviani Emilia Hilna, a Development Economics student from the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga (FEB UNAIR), has made a positive mark through community service activities in the field of education. In the past three years, Alivia has been actively involved in volunteer activities both in her hometown, Surabaya, and outside the city of Surabaya. Now, she has achieved new achievements through a teaching project at the Hulu Kelang Guidance School, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, through the SMI Youth Exchange program. This teaching project was carried out to help and provide teaching guidance to underprivileged Indonesian children who do not have access to education in Malaysia.
SMI Youth Exchange, an initiative of Semangat Muda Indonesia (Indonesian Youth Spirit), provides opportunities for young people to experience cross-cultural learning, education, and understanding of social issues through youth projects in various countries. Alivia successfully secured a place in this program, demonstrating her success through her dedication to education. Furthermore, she successfully secured full funding for this program, qualifying for the fully funded program, which allowed her to receive free airfare, meals, accommodation, and program expenses, all covered by the organizer.
During the project, which took place from January 9-12, 2024, Aliviani not only taught Indonesian children in Kuala Lumpur but also actively participated in activities that supported the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4, Quality Education. She believes that every Indonesian child has the right to equitable and inclusive access to education.
In addition to contributing to education, Alivia also participated in visits to the Indonesian Embassies in Singapore and Malaysia. She discussed aspects of education, culture, and economics with Mr. Satriya Wibawa, Ph.D., the Education and Cultural Attaché at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore. This activity not only fostered global understanding but also supported cultural exchange and cross-border understanding.
Alivia explained that another advantage was the opportunity to discuss the program at several universities in Malaysia, including Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, and the International Islamic University Malaysia. This demonstrated that the SMI Youth Exchange program extends beyond teaching and learning, providing a platform for direct interaction with education stakeholders.
For Alivia, her participation in the SMI Youth Exchange is not only about broadening her international cultural and educational perspectives, but also a tangible demonstration of the role of youth in building social sustainability for all levels of society. With her enthusiasm, Alivia Emilia exemplifies how involving youth in global projects can have a positive impact and support the achievement of sustainable development goals.
