(Feb News) Everyone has the right to obtain equality and access in all fields of life, including our brothers and sisters with disabilities. The spirit of upholding the right to persons with disabilities becomes the Initiation of the Department of Community Service BEM FEB UNAIR through the work program we care 2023 to carry out activities that are expected to increase public awareness to participate in an effort to create an inclusive community for people with disabilities.
On September 13, 2023, located in the Mindrowo Hall 3rd Floor FEB Unair Building, we care about having successfully carried out their second pre-event through the sign language training class titled "Silent Class". On this occasion BEM FEB UNAIRS in collaboration with the arrival community (Bisindo and Accessibility Team) Surabaya, a community that actively holds sign language training classes with the aim of increasing public awareness of the importance of learning sign language in order to communicate with deaf friends. The resource person who also became a mentor in the silent class this time was Mr. Ika Irawan as Chair of the Community Arriving Surabaya.
The series of activities opened with remarks from Zefanya Dante as Chair of Kita Peduli 2023, followed by remarks from Hafizhun Shadiq as President of BEM FEB UNAIR 2023. Entering the peak of the event was a presentation session from Mr. Ika Irawan who explained the background and concept of Deaf Culture. Not only limited to theory, Mr. Ika Irawan also directly intervened in teaching several forms of basic sign language for communication.
It is hoped that this Silent Class with the spirit of "Unity in Diversity" can be the starting point for PENGMAS BEM FEB UNAIR to further spread awareness regarding Deaf Culture so that Deaf Friends can carry out activities and interact more comfortably without experiencing discrimination.
