(FEB NEWS) Everyone has the right to equality and access in all areas of life, including our brothers and sisters with disabilities. The spirit of upholding the rights of people with disabilities has become the catalyst for the initiation of the Community Service Department of BEM FEB UNAIR through the 2023 We Care Work Program to organize activities that are expected to raise public awareness to participate in efforts to create an inclusive society for people with disabilities.
On September 13, 2023, at the Mindrowo Hall, 3rd Floor, FEB UNAIR Building, Kita Peduli successfully held their second Pre-Event through a sign language training class entitled "Silent Class". On this occasion, the BEM FEB UNAIR Community Service collaborated with the TIBA Community (Bisindo and Accessibility Team) Surabaya, a community that actively holds sign language training classes with the aim of increasing public awareness of the importance of learning sign language to communicate with Deaf Friends. The resource person who also served as a mentor in this Silent Class was Mr. Ika Irawan as the Head of the TIBA Surabaya Community.
The series of activities opened with remarks from Zefanya Dante as the Chair of Kita Peduli 2023, followed by remarks from Hafizhun Shadiq as the President of BEM FEB UNAIR 2023. Entering the highlight of the event was a presentation session from Mr. Ika Irawan who explained the background and concept of Deaf Culture. Not only limited to theory, Mr. Ika Irawan also directly participated in teaching several forms of basic sign language for communication.
The Silent Class with the spirit of "Unity in Diversity" is expected to be the starting point for the BEM FEB UNAIR Community Service to further spread awareness regarding Deaf Culture so that Deaf Friends can carry out activities and interact more comfortably without experiencing discrimination.
