Next, entering the Core session, in the presentation delivered by Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist – Clinical Psychologist and Mental Health, Universitas Airlangga, delivering his material with the theme: "Optimize Your Potential by Choosing a Major with Certainty".
As an introduction, Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist, stated, "Actually, it's not about where I fit in, but rather, what kind of fit do I want to develop myself towards?" This is because the personality of a student, aged 15-16, is still developing. Therefore, Afif Kurniawan reminded people not to be too rigid in choosing a major.
Choosing a major, according to Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist, is a big decision, because at that moment, all students are "facing a gate", to make a decision about the future. The future, according to Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist, is not always a career, but at that moment (choosing a major), it may be the first time that parents give them the freedom to make a decision about their major. It is a big moment for students. The reactions or responses can also vary. Some go very well/fine until college, some not so well, and some can even lead to conflict with parents, etc.
This decision-making will be the responsibility of the student for the next 4 years/during college, so it requires good consideration and a good decision to be made.
Furthermore, Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist conveyed the facts that occur to many prospective students when approaching the time to choose a major, including: 1) Anxiety, 2) Confusion, 3) Negative Thinking, 4) Poor Communication with Parents, 5) Decreased Self-Confidence, 6) Eating and Drinking Disorders, and Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist, how to respond to these facts.
Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist, also invited the participants to bring up their automatic thoughts, regarding choosing a major/fears that arise before entering college, so that from these thoughts, Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist, can help find ways/approaches that can be optimized from within to resolve them.
Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., a psychologist, also shared methods to combat negative thoughts. He also provided five tips for choosing a study program: 1) Filter and Research, 2) Choose a program you're interested in, 3) Play by your strengths and skills, 4) Follow your heart, and 5) Reflect
Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist explains that in filtering a choice of study program from various information that has been dug up, both through discussions and through information via the internet, there are several things to remember "look for what you really have an interest in, interest does not mean passion. Passion is everything we like, so in choosing, prioritize interest. Because if you are interested then you will fight for it to succeed, even if there are difficulties that arise, then you will try to overcome/face them. But if passion, where passion is comfort, then once you find discomfort, your motivation will decrease.
At the end of his presentation, Afif Kurniawan, M.Si., Psychologist said that the key to the process of choosing a major is:
- Research and filter. Find out as much information as possible, then filter it based on your potential. Discuss it with your guidance counselor or developmental psychologist.
- Choose and communicate. Discuss with your family, improve communication, accept and listen to each other. Let's work together as parents to develop good listening skills through the filters our children/students have developed.
- Personality and Grit. Let's grow together, develop together, and determine our grit and perseverance, so we can be sharp in facing what needs to be done.
- Determination and Direction. Once you've made your choice, prepare everything you need.
Greetings, choose your major wisely, according to your interests. Know yourself as best as possible and optimize all your abilities. Let's develop a growth mindset and improve communication. May your choice be the best for you.
