(FEB NEWS) Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga (FEB UNAIR) participated in the National Seminar entitled "The Urgency of Energy Transition to Prevent the Impact of Climate Change Universitas Airlangga" which was held at the Garuda Mukti Hall, 5th Floor Management Office, MERR C Campus, Universitas Airlangga, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. This event was held in collaboration between Universitas Airlangga and the Secretariat General of the People's Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI). This seminar was attended by more than 500 participants from the academic community Universitas Airlangga.
The event began with remarks from the Rector Universitas Airlangga, Prof. Dr. M. Nasih, MT. Ak., CA. In his remarks, Prof. Nasih emphasized the importance of the role of universities in driving the energy transition in Indonesia. "Today is a special day because we will discuss the energy transition and climate change. Every day we feel how the climate is changing, sea levels are rising, landslides are happening everywhere, and this is no longer just a theory," said Prof. Nasih. He emphasized that natural resources are not something that is unlimited, so they need to be managed wisely so that future generations can still enjoy them.
This seminar presented two main speakers, namely Dr. Eddy Soeparno, SH., MH., – Deputy Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia and Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, MSi. – Vice Rector of Unair for Research, Innovation and Community Development. This event was moderated by Prof. Dr. Suparto Wijoyo, SH., MHum. – Field of Publication, Research, Community Service, Internationalization and Digitalization.
In his presentation, Dr. Eddy Soeparno highlighted the urgency of energy transition policies in Indonesia as part of global efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change. He emphasized that Indonesia must move quickly in developing new and renewable energy to avoid being left behind in global competition. "Indonesia has great renewable energy potential, but currently we still rely on fossil fuels. Energy security must be a priority so that we do not continue to rely on energy imports," said Dr. Eddy. He also invited Universitas Airlangga to play a more active role in creating innovative studies and solutions to energy transition problems in Indonesia. In addition, Dr. Eddy highlighted the importance of transportation electrification, the use of environmentally friendly fuels, and the implementation of a carbon tax to support green energy policies.
Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, MSi., in her presentation session provided an academic perspective on the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition, especially in relation to the role of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) before the Law on the energy transition is passed. She emphasized that the policies to be taken must be research-based and consider long-term sustainability. "The MPR RI needs to ensure that the energy transition policies made are not only short-term, but also have a strong foundation for economic and environmental sustainability. Therefore, input from academics is very important," said Prof. Ni Nyoman. She also emphasized the role Universitas Airlangga in supporting energy transition policies through innovative research, environmental conservation, and collaboration with various global institutions.
FEB UNAIR's participation in this seminar demonstrates the faculty's commitment to supporting the energy transition agenda as a strategic step in addressing the challenges of climate change. Collaboration between academics, government, and industry is expected to make energy transition policies more effective in realizing sustainable development in Indonesia.
Universitas Airlangga continues to strengthen partnerships to realize a sustainable energy transition. UNAIR actively collaborates with various institutions, both domestic and international, to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and build research and innovation capacity in the green energy sector. This collaboration reflects UNAIR's role in building global synergy to achieve environmental sustainability and broader societal welfare.
