PROMOTING THE PROGRESS OF MSMES THROUGH DIGITAL EDUCATION: COLLABORATION BETWEEN FEB UNAIR STUDENTS AND KPPU IN COMMUNITY SERVICE IN EAST JAKARTA CITY

Jakarta, Tuesday, August 12, 2025 – Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga (FEB UNAIR) through its community service program, namely “Caring for Micro and Small Enterprises: Community Empowerment Vol. 2” once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDGs 1 (No Poverty), SDGs 4 (Quality Education), SDGs 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDGs 17 (Partnerships to Achieve Goals). This time, the community service activity was carried out in Pondok Kelapa Village, East Jakarta City in collaboration with KPPU (Business Competition Supervisory Commission) Regional Office IV. This activity is divided into two, namely focusing on empowering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through digital marketing training and literacy on healthy and unhealthy business competition. As well as counseling or socialization related to FEB UNAIR and KPPU in one of the high schools, namely SMAS Muhammadiyah 23 Jakarta.
This program is motivated by the still low understanding of MSMEs regarding digital marketing strategies and the importance of creating a fair business climate. In this context, the community service team consisting of Field Supervisor Lecturer (DPL), namely Zahrin Haznina Qalby, SM, M.Sc. and active student of FEB UNAIR, namely Siska Amelia Putri, Bachelor of Economics Study Program, who strives to provide practical education relevant to current economic challenges. This activity is also part of a strategic collaboration with the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) in encouraging competitive and ethical businesses.
This community service activity lasted for almost one month, namely on July 17 - August 8, 2025. During this period, participants (MSMEs) received material on the basics of digital marketing, healthy business competition and unfair business competition, as well as an introduction to the KPPU and its duties and authorities. In addition, participants also tried to create and register for digital payments in the form of Qris.
Three MSMEs participated in intensive training:
1) Madura Chicken and Goat Satay.
This MSME lacks a cashless payment method, causing customers accustomed to using QRIS to often cancel their purchases. Promotion is still limited to word of mouth.
2) Pempek Bejo.
This MSME faces a decline in customer numbers since the introduction of digital payments or QRIS. They also rely heavily on cash payment systems and do not yet understand the potential of digital services to improve business efficiency.
3) Madura Green Bean Porridge.
This MSME lacks a visual promotional strategy, making it difficult to compete with similar products that are more visually appealing.
100 high school students also participated in this activity. After the training, participants stated that their knowledge in marketing products digitally and their awareness of the importance of healthy business competition increased. Furthermore, the three participants successfully created a digital payment method in the form of QRIS, a skill they had not previously mastered.
"The Big Brother program has really helped me, especially the part about creating QRIS. Usually, people nowadays ask whether or not they have QRIS when buying," said Mrs. Rosi, one of the participants in the heavy food business.
This activity has a direct impact felt by participants in increasing the economic capacity of local communities and encouraging the independence of MSMEs in a sustainable manner. They are now more confident in running their businesses, able to reach wider consumers, and have a better understanding of ethics in competing in the market.
FEB UNAIR students actively participated in the entire activity process, starting from designing materials, facilitating coaching sessions, to providing technical assistance to participants. Collaboration between students, lecturers, and the KPPU strengthens the synergy between the academic world, regulators, and the community.
This program is in line with:
• SDGs 1 which reduces poverty by increasing the economic capacity of MSMEs.
• SDGs 4 which provides quality education in the field of digital marketing and business ethics.
• SDGs 8 which encourages inclusive economic growth by strengthening the MSME sector.
• SDGs 17 which realizes effective partnerships between universities (FEB Unair), the community, and government institutions (KPPU).
