On May 10, 2021, coinciding with the 27th of Ramadan 1442 H, the Department of Islamic Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga held a Muslimah webinar themed "Balance Between Household and Career Roles." This webinar featured Prof. Dr. H. Ahmad Zahro, MA, a professor at Sunan Ampel Islamic University Surabaya (UINSA). The event was moderated by Dr. Sri Herianingrum, SE., M.Si., the head of the Islamic Economics Department, FEB Unair.
In this webinar, Prof. Ahmad Zahro initially examined Islamic jurisprudence, which places women and men in different divisions of inheritance and aqiqah. However, upon closer examination, he stated that the nominal or numerical values of justice do not have to be equal, as justice must be proportionate. He then explained the role of career women and recounted the story of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who at that time permitted Siti Khadijah to engage in trade. Khadijah's trade even became one of the largest commodities of her time. Much of the proceeds from Khadijah's business were used to finance the Prophet's preaching.
It is also explained in the letter Al-Baqarah verse 228 which means "And they (women) have rights equal to their obligations in a proper manner. But husbands have advantages over them. Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.". And in the letter An-Nisa' verse 32 which means "And do not envy the bounty which Allah has given some of you more than others. (Because) for men there is a share of what they have earned, and for women (too) there is a share of what they have earned. Ask Allah for some of His bounty. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of all things." . It was also conveyed by Mr. Ahmad Zahro that from the verse of the Qur'an it can be taken the point that men and women each have the right to their own success depending on their efforts, and of course it must be accompanied by prayer and trust in Allah.
In the webinar, Ahmad Zahro also mentioned that women are highly respected in Islam. Islamic history also demonstrates that Islam is a religion that highly values women. One example is the Surah An-Nisa', which means "Women." He also briefly touched on the issue of polygamy in Islam, which allows men to marry up to four women, subject to various conditions.
After the speakers delivered their material, the moderator opened a Q&A session for webinar participants. Participants were very active in asking questions to further explore the discussion. In this session, Mr. Ahmad Zahroh also stated that when a woman is married and has a career, her husband must also be able to balance it, and that, regardless of the matter, providing for her family remains the husband's responsibility. Therefore, women who are married and have a career should discuss this matter with their husbands first, to avoid potential problems. He also emphasized that the rights and obligations of husbands and wives must be truly balanced.
Following the Q&A session, the webinar concluded with a group photo and a closing prayer. Thankfully, the event ran smoothly without any hiccups, and participants were clearly impressed with the material presented by the speakers. (Auvi/DES)
