"INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AT CAN THO UNIVERSITY EXPLORES SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: INSIGHTS FROM VIETNAM, MALAYSIA, AND INDONESIA"

(FEB NEWS) The International Conference with the theme "Sustainable Growth In Vietnam and Beyond" was held on December 15 2023 at Can Tho University, Can Tho, Vietnam.

Sustainable growth refers to a mode of economic and social development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Indonesia, like other countries, faces the challenge of achieving sustainable growth. Indonesia has sought to balance economic development with environmental and social considerations. One of them is Infrastructure Development, where Indonesia recognizes the importance of strong infrastructure for sustainable growth.

So with this conference, it can be one of the steps to introduce sustainable growth from all aspects which will be compared with Vietnam. And also become knowledge to the delegates about sustainable growth in three countries, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

On December 15, eight (8) students from the Department of Economics and one (1) lecturer from the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Airlangga (FEB UNAIR) had the opportunity to do paper presentations with other participants from Vietnam and Malaysia. Each participant from Indonesia has a different paper that raises the issue of Sustainable Growth in Indonesia, especially East Java, which will be compared with Sustainable Growth in Vietnam and Malaysia. Each paper presented will be responded directly by senior lecturers from Can Tho University, Vietnam.

The delegation and accompanying lecturers also received souvenirs which were handed over directly by the vice rector of Can Tho University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Anh Tu. Hopefully, this conference can strengthen the existing relationship and continue the relationship in the future.

This activity is in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sustainable growth, as emphasized at the conference, reflects the principles outlined in the SDGs, particularly Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure. Discussions centered on balancing economic development with environmental and social considerations, echoing the SDGs' call for an inclusive and sustainable global economy. The Indonesian delegation from Universitas Airlangga, who presented a paper on sustainable growth in Indonesia, demonstrated a commitment to integrating these principles into academic discourse and practical considerations. By fostering collaboration among participants from Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, the conference was an important step towards achieving the SDGs and promoting a shared understanding of sustainable growth practices in the Southeast Asian region.
