29012020 Coordinating Minister Airlangga's Public Lecture Reveals Global Economic Uncertainty Until Omnibus Law 4

UNAIR NEWS – Facing the uncertain global economic situation between the issues of the trade war and the health crisis, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Dr. (HC) Ir. Airlangga Hartanto, MBA., MMT., IPU. was present among Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) students to share their views in a public lecture.

The public lecture took place at Fadjar Notonagoro Hall, Faculty of Economics and Business UNAIR, on Wednesday (29/1/20). The event took the main theme "The Future Direction of Indonesia's Economic Development in Realizing Inclusive and Sustainable Development".

UNAIR Chancellor Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, SE., MT, Ak., CMA in his speech revealed UNAIR's serious steps to continue to be involved in the national economy through teaching industry.

"We are currently developing teaching industry in Madura. This is of course to accommodate and improve the innovation of our students. Because after all, universities are the main place for the development of innovation and the development of an established economy,” said Prof. bad luck.

Airlangga in his opening highlighted the uncertainty that is present in the current global economy. Where almost every country in the world has an economic growth trend that is below the average global economic growth.

“There are many events that have a significant impact on the global economy. The weakening of the European Union due to Brexit, East Asia heating up due to Japan-Korea competition, hyperinflation in Latin America to the latest corona virus which has weakened the tourism, automotive, and Asian economies," said Airlangga.

Although these events have had a negative effect on the economic growth of many countries, Airlangga even revealed that they have brought positive things to the Indonesian economy.

In the midst of this uncertainty, Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, emerged as the most stable region. This happened because of several important points, including a good democratic situation, the birth of Indo-Pacific cooperation, and sustainable multilateral relations between countries.

“As a result, we can see a stable Indonesian exchange rate at thirteen thousand and six hundred, as well as stable economic growth at around five percent. Even our inflation in recent years has reached its lowest level in the range of three percent," he said.

However, despite these achievements, the government still has a lot of homework that needs to be done. Some of these include low employment, low inclusiveness, increased innovation, and protection for the workforce and the MSME industry.

"Therefore, we present the Omnibus Law and pre-employment cards. The Omnibus Law itself will become Indonesia's structural reform in the economy and employment. There will be a lot of simplification and ease of investment, business, land acquisition, and employment," said Airlangga.

Meanwhile the pre-employment card provides main programs such as training, job placements, to venture capital. Also present were B30 which reduced the use of fuel and was transferred to palm oil.

Airlangga then also highlighted the magnitude skill gaps existing in Indonesia. This makes many high school and vocational high school graduates not absorbed in the industry. In the future, the government plans to build polytechnics, vocational schools, and training institutions in accordance with the growing industry in the related area.

"Furthermore, we will build economic area connectivity, integration of northern and southern regions, as well as superior programs in special economic zones such as Malang, Central Java, and Madura," he said.

In the public lecture held at the Fadjar Notonagoro Hall, various high-ranking university and government officials were also present. In addition, no less than 800 students from various majors participated in the material presented by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs. (*)
