PROF. MADYA DR. MOHD SYAKIR MOHD ROSDI DISCUSSES ISLAMIC POLITICAL ECONOMY AT FEB UNAIR GUEST LECTURE

(FEB NEWS) The Department of Sharia Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Airlangga (FEB UNAIR) once again held a Guest Lecture event featuring an international speaker, Prof. Dr. Mohd Syakir Mohd Rosdi, Associate Professor from the Center for Islamic Development and Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

This event took place on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Maleo Hall, 3rd Floor of the Ex-Pharmacy Building, Faculty of Economics and Business, Airlangga University. The guest lecture raised the theme "A Top-Down Approach to Islamic Political Economy for Selected Islamic Countries in Southeast Asia.".

This course conveys the importance of a critical understanding of economic approaches in the context of contemporary Islamic political values and structures.

In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Mohd Syakir discussed in depth the differences between top-down and bottom-up approaches to economics, as well as their application within an Islamic political framework, with Brunei Darussalam as the primary case study. He highlighted how the governance system based on the Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) concept, the vision of the Zikir Nation, and the Brunei Vision 2035 demonstrate the consistent application of Islamic values in modern state governance.

"The top-down approach does not conflict with Islamic principles as long as it is carried out with justice and trust, as was done by the Sultan of Brunei in leading his country," said Prof. Shakir in front of the participants.

Prof. Syakir also emphasized in closing that economics and politics are two aspects that go hand in hand in supporting a nation's sustainability. If either element, whether an expert in economics or politics, is absent, the nation's direction and stability will be disrupted.

This activity was attended by dozens of students from the Bachelor and Master programs in Islamic Economics, FEB UNAIR, who actively discussed and expressed critical views on the material presented.

Through this discussion, FEB UNAIR once again demonstrated its commitment to providing new insights for students on how the Islamic approach is not only normative, but also applicable in the economic-political governance of a country.
